Find Your Way to Appliqué

person Denise Frontczak

The Journey

Appliqué is the art of applying decorative fabric shapes on top of a background material. The technique offers freedom of design and allows the quilter to create complicated, curved images which would be difficult, if not impossible, to piece. There are many different methods of achieving the appliqué. This class will introduce you to several techniques and allow you to practice on some small sample blocks. The goal of the class is to enable you to find the appliqué method that best suits you and the effect you wish to achieve.

This is a sampler class that lends itself to using up fabric scraps. You will need a 7” square of background fabric for each sample block, as well as a minimum 5” square of heart fabric per block (some blocks have multiple hearts). You will make at least 9 sample blocks, but could make 24 or more if you are highly motivated.

If you want to put your blocks together into a quilt, you will want to coordinate your fabrics. If you would like all the backgrounds to be the same fabric you will need a half yard of fabric to cut into 15 7” background squares.

Alternatively, if you like a scrappy look, choose a color family (for example white, beige, grey or black) and cut background squares from different fabrics within that family.

The same rule applies for the heart fabrics. You will need a total of 3/8 yard of one or more fabrics to create 15 sample blocks. They can be many fabrics from one color family or multiple colors. Even if you want a planned look to your quilt you should choose at least 3 different fabrics with light, medium and dark values.
